My poor tractors have to sleep outside. A year ago I could not get my 318 with Honda 24 repower to start. Turn the key NOTHING. I replaced the switch, pto switch, black box, fuses and probably several other things. Proving to myself how dumb I am is not my favorite thing to do. I have let this sit (outside) for a year. Now I want to try again to get this started. Remembering all my frustrations I want to by-pass everything. I don't need lights or the PTO.
With a wire from the negative side of the battery to the tractor frame what other wires would I need to run where?

When you turn the key do you get any lights or power anywhere?
Im not sure if your Honda engine has a separate coil or not, but you should be able to Jump the + lead to the +coil terminal, (If you have a separate coil), and jump the starter from the + side of the battery to get it going.

I'm back. This time with an 83 with an Onan. Start of the season and I could not get it started. I replaced the electric fuel pump I had installed several years ago and it started right up. I turned it around and moved to a work area. Took the mower off and installed a hoist on the three point lift. Turned the key to start and one click. Replaced the switch with a new one, I got dash lights but no power to the purple wire at the solenoid. I replaced the PTO switch. Now I don't even get the dash lights. This is over simplified as my memory is not totally reliable I have been messing with this for a while. The bottom line is that $17 here and $24 there and a different set of circumstances with each change is frustrating. I have no desire to cut my toes off. I am careful. I have all my seat switches straight wired. I start and move tractors while standing on the ground. I load tractors standing on the ground. The ramps are happier without the rider weight. I have power to the circuit breaker I want to run this to the switch and then to the purple wire at the solenoid and where else needed. I don't need the PTO or lights, but need to get it started.
Pictures of where to hook the wires would be useful as I'm not sure what a coil (on a 318) looks like.

Hooked a red wire from the circuit breaker to the "B" prong at the switch. Red wire from "A" prong to "S2" prong. Blue wire from "S1" to small screw on solenoid. Turning the key to start gives noise but does not turn the engine. Will try a different battery. Any ideas?
Plan to also run two additional red wires (20 amp and 3 amp circuits) from "A" prong on switch. Will connect the electric fuel pump to one of these. Still don't know where to connect with the coil, points or what ever. Pictures?

Anyone have an idea? I don't think you have to be signed in to post.

There are two lugs on the coil. You have a 50 - 50 chance of getting the correct one.

Ever get the 318 or 420 started?
Maybe you ought to try another site. I check by here once a month or so and usually there have been 30 or so guest and 0 members, so it is not very active to say the least. Why I do not know. It should be a nice site.
