Hi all, I am new to the board and new to the 318... just bought one (with the requisite broken con rod) and have torn it apart to get it ready for a Vanguard this weekend. Going to have to carve a new firewall with the plasma cutter, and weld up a new screen for under the frame. My problem is this... the transmission release lever does not line up with the valves... close but about 1/8-1/4" out. Can the lever be moved? Or do I / can I move the entire transmission back by 1/8-1/4"? The valves are not stuck, but the lever is not able to press on them. Alternative I suppose is to make a new lever... What holds the lever down? I know there are light springs in the valves that push back up. Thanks Row.

OK I moved the lever as far forward as I could, even ground down the right side mount as it was pushing against a tab on the frame... still could use another 1/8"... any ideas?
Just finished cutting and welding up a new firewall as the original one was in 3 pieces. New one is made out of 16ga steel, and built new tabs to weld on. Much heavier than the stock one, should outlast the new engine. Going to pick up the B&S 23 tomorrow, then I can cut the hole for the flywheel the right size.
Also made a new belly pan with perforated stainless, again, 16ga, I am tired of broken sheet metal.
Row.

Hi Rowglide!
The rear does have some play when it is mounted up, but I have never heard of this issue.
There should be a slot in the frame the end of the lever plugs into to hold it down on the valves.
