My JD 318 power steering cylinder started to leak at the rod-end when fully extended. I have another to swap out. However I have questions that I hope some of you with more experience can guide me.
1- I'm assuming the spare cylinder that I purchased some time ago has fluid in it. Should I purge this cylinder of any fluid before installing it on my machine? I would think the easy way to do this would be to hook it to my system, remove the appropriate fitting and exercise the ram to push out the fluid. Is there a chance that this would introduce air into my system? Also, should I attempt to recharge the cylinder with fluid before installing? Any other information would be helpful.
2- I would like to attemp the rebuild of the leaking cylinder. My approach would be to cut it open carefully at the edge of the existing weld on the rod end. I would do this with the rod fully retracted. Once open, I would replace all the necessary parts. I would then have an expert welder, weld it close. I'm assuming that the cylinder would need to be kept cool while welding in order not to damage the new internal parts.
Does anyone have any experience with this repair?
Thanks for the help!
